Christmas Carol titled Twelve Days of Christmas – A strange Christian Song with an interesting Catholic history and background

There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled many believers and non believers by its catchy and ‘Farm Ville’ themed lyrics. For example turtle doves, leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won’t come out of the pear tree are related with Christmas season?

From 1558 until 1829 in England, Roman Catholics were not permitted to practice their faith openly. A few Catholic priests and believers wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. The lyrics in the song has two levels of meaning I.e. the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of the Catholic church. Each noun elements in the carol has a code word for a religious reality to help Catholic children remember easily.

The 12 code words with related religious meanings are listed below in accordance to the rhyme of the Christmas carol.
•  The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
•  Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
•  Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
•  The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
•  The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.

Bible Study on Becoming Vessels For The Holy Spirit And To Abide By The Guidance And Commandments Of The Holy Spirit according to Romans 6:23, Romans 8:6-23, Galations 5:22

The Spirit and the Flesh are totally separate species which are at odds against each other. As harsh as it sounds, their differences may be depicted like Heaven and Hell and has been spelled out clearly in Romans 8. 6. For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace.

Evident from our daily lives are those who are addicted to phonography, rampant uncontrolled sexual activities and desires, adultery, drugs, gambling, bullying, abusing, hating, lying, colluding, cheating, stealing, robbing, molesting, raping, etc will eventually spiral into unimaginable trouble and self destruction.

It is clear from the scriptures below that the Spirit and Flesh don’t mix. And it is mutually exclusive, where it is either or and never both. Romans: 8. 5. For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. It is in the news everyday, that people who commit all sorts of crimes and immorality, are those that have no self conscious and Spirit bearing. For they are their own God and all the wrongs have been sanctified to become right.

According to the bible the choice between Spirit and Flesh has got its consequences. Choosing the Spirit will result in Godly gifts as in Galations 5:22 but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, faithfulness. Whereas choosing the Flesh will not derive any Godly blessings and eternal salvation as portrait in Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death;  but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord and also in Romans 8. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness.

Christians moves in the Spirit and lives with Holy Spirit, we are a reborn in the Holy Spirit as described in Romans 8. 9. But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And the Spirit of God that dwells in you is the same the Spirit of God that raised Jesus Christ up from the dead, which mentioned in Romans 8. 11. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

As Jesus followers we will also have the Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ in us and thus flow many giftings of the Holy Spirit. By the Word of God, we pray that we shall be good vessels for the Holy Spirit, abide by the guidance of the Holy Spirit and to never grief our Holy Spirit in us by pursing the Flesh.

Bible Study on Let The Will Of God Fall Into Place And Let the Passion Of Christ Consume Us Like A Fire according to 1 Kings 18

Our motivation should be Jesus. When you fall in love with Jesus, it becomes an addictive and we start to change to become more like Jesus. As believers, we know that making the right choices in life, at work, in your relationship, etc has never been easy because there is a price for following Christ and doing the right things.

The Holy Bible asked us to give but as humans we like to receive. There is always a struggle between right and wrong, light and darkness. And the odds against the righteous might seem overwhelming I.e. 450 to 1. Nevertheless, there is always a choice for us to choose, either between good and evil or Jehovah and Baal. The choice is only either one but never both as depicted in the scripture below.

1 Kings: 18. 22. Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23. Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under.

Our Bible ask us to walk by faith and trust in Him. The understanding of the Word of God requires faith,  while to have faith requires patience. When there is no conviction in a person’s faith, people tends to become quiet, passive and subdue to the world surrounding them. Because faith without conviction is dead. Similarly, faith without the Word of God is also dead.

1 Kings: 18. 24. And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

From the above scriptures,  fire is the representation of God’s presence and the will of God.  When God lit a fire on the wood, the wood starts to change and the fire becomes hotter and vigorous. Be wise all children of God, chose God as your creator and your master of our lives. Let Him ignite the fire in your soul and turn it into a inferno.

We must refrain from becoming match stick Christian, who is only interested in lighting small match stick flames, which can easily be bloated by the smallest wind. For any believer who is double minded do not stand to gain anything.

1 Kings: 18. 26. And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made. 27. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked. 28. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them.

1 Kings: 18. 36. And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the [evening] oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37. Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and [that] thou hast turned their heart back again. 38. Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.

When Jesus is the center of our focus, He gives us balance and peace. Only God can answer our call us witness in the scripture above, where God asked Elijah to pour water on the alter twice and the fire of God came and consumed the alter. The only requirement we need is to be connected with God, acknowledge Him as our Abba Father and seek Him with all our. hearts.

Sometimes we give up easily as believers. But God is not only looking for people, but people who can move in the supernatural and do the impossible for Him. God is also looking for good vessels, who can be taught and receptive to the Word of God. Do not give up children of God, let God change our hearts!
